Puno City was officially founded on November 4, 1668, by Viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro. This event marked the formal establishment of the city during the Spanish colonial era in Peru. Located on the shores of Lake Titicaca, it is known as the folkloric capital of Peru due to its vibrant festivals and cultural celebrations. The highland city retains a unique charm with its cobbled streets, historic squares, and colorful churches. Every year, Puno becomes the epicenter of festivities such as the Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria, where thousands of dancers and musicians gather to pay homage to the city’s patron saint with colorful parades and folkloric performances. This makes it an unmissable tourist destination for travelers who love indigenous dances and lights.
