DAY 1: Iquitos – Cumaceba Amazon Lodge : Welcome to the Heart of the Amazon
Your adventure begins with a pickup at the airport or your hotel. We will start with a fascinating walking tour through the historic center of Iquitos, where you will step back into the golden age of the rubber boom, exploring architectural treasures such as the iconic Iron House (Casa de Fierro), designed by Gustave Eiffel, the legendary Hotel Palace, Casa Cohen, and Casa Fitzcarraldo—silent witnesses to the incredible stories of this era.
From the pier, we will depart by boat along the Itaya River toward the mighty Amazon River, the largest river in the world by volume of water. During the navigation, you will admire the impressive bridge over the Nanay River, the largest bridge in Peru, connecting the city with the vast Amazon rainforest. As we continue downstream, you will observe authentic riverside communities that continue to live according to the ancestral rhythms of the Amazon.
We will arrive at Cumaceba Ecolodge, your home in the heart of the rainforest. After settling into your cozy cabin, enjoy a delicious lunch featuring traditional flavors of the region.
In the afternoon, venture into the pristine rainforest on a guided walk, where you will discover the secrets of medicinal plants, towering trees, and have the unique opportunity to interact with and feed squirrel monkeys in their natural habitat. Weather permitting, you may also witness one of the most beautiful sunsets you will ever see, reflected on the waters of the Amazon River.
After dinner, get ready for a nighttime canoe adventure through the mysterious Shansho Lagoon. Beneath the star-filled sky, we will search for caimans using flashlights while the nocturnal symphony of the rainforest surrounds you: crickets, frogs, nocturnal birds, and the gentle rustling of the wind through the trees.
Back at the lodge, our guide will share fascinating Amazonian legends and myths.
Overnight: Cumaceba Ecolodge.
DAY 2: Cumaceba Amazon Lodge – Awakening of the Jungle
Wake up with the first rays of the Loreto sun and embark on a special morning excursion to observe the awakening of Amazonian birds in their natural habitat. Sunrise in the Amazon is a spectacle you will remember forever.
After an energizing breakfast, we will visit the Neyser Wildlife Breeding Center, a conservation project where you will learn about different species of monkeys, adorable sloths, and other rescued animals undergoing rehabilitation, all living in a semi-wild environment.
The highlight of the day: searching for the Amazon pink and gray river dolphins! These fascinating freshwater cetaceans are among the region’s most treasured wildlife. With a little luck, you may see them swimming and playing in the river.
We will return to the lodge to enjoy a final Amazonian lunch before beginning our journey back to Iquitos.
Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel by motokar, one of the most authentic forms of transportation in Iquitos, or directly to the airport by private vehicle, taking unforgettable memories of the Amazon with you.
