The Tambopata National Reserve is a treasure of the Peruvian Amazon and a must-visit destination for nature lovers from around the globe! It is a region of protected land, located in the south-east of Peru, close to the borders with Bolivia and Brazil. Throughout your stay you’ll befriend local wildlife, kayak down Amazonian tributaries, swim in the Tambopata River, observe the colourful spectacle of the Macaw Clay Lick, paddle in a wooden canoe over the waters of Lake Sandoval, camp for the night in the untouched landscape of the Bahuaja Sonene National Park, and search for the glowing eyes of freshwater caiman on a night hunt along the river.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Transfer to Wasai Tambopata Lodge
  • Day 2 : Camping in Bahuaja Sonene National Park
  • Day 3 : Macaw Clay Lick Excursion
  • Day 4 : Lake Sandoval Excursion
  • Day 5 : Transfer to Puerto Maldonado airport.

DAY 1 : Transfer to Wasaí Tambopata Lodge | Night Walk.

Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport, you will be welcomed and transferred to Wasaí Maldonado Hotel, where you will enjoy a tropical welcome drink and receive a brief explanation of the journey.

We will then begin an approximately two-hour trip to Wasaí Tambopata Lodge. The journey starts with a 47-kilometre drive along a paved road, followed by 17 kilometres on an unpaved road through local farms and primary rainforest.

Upon reaching the port on the Tambopata River, our motorboat will be waiting to take us on an approximately 20-minute journey to Wasaí Tambopata Lodge. A box lunch will be provided along the way.

During the journey, we will have the opportunity to observe several species of birds and, with some luck, families of capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, as well as caimans and other wildlife.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and accommodated at the lodge. After a short rest, we will take a night walk through the forest to observe and listen to insects, bats, frogs and, perhaps, encounter other nocturnal mammals.

We will then return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay. The diverse sounds of the rainforest will accompany us during our first night in the Amazon.

Overnight at Wasaí Tambopata Lodge.

Meals included: Box Lunch and Dinner.

DAY 2 : Campamento | Kayak | Concesión Privada.

You will wake up surrounded by nature, accompanied by the calls of oropendolas and other exotic birds. Early risers may enjoy the scenery and take photographs along the lodge’s private trails or from our observation tower while enjoying freshly brewed coffee or a herbal infusion.

After breakfast, we will cross the Tambopata River by boat and begin a walk along one of the trails within our Private Conservation Concession. With some luck, we may spot mammals such as monkeys, deer, peccaries, and other wildlife. During the excursion, we will also have the opportunity to try piranha fishing and visit small local plantations.

Upon returning to the lodge, we may enjoy a kayaking excursion and take a refreshing swim in the river.

After lunch, we will board the boat and travel toward the Tambopata National Reserve, where our campsite is located. During the journey, we will pass through beautiful landscapes with little or no human presence, areas dedicated exclusively to conservation and ecotourism. This route offers excellent opportunities to observe birds and wildlife such as capybaras, jaguars, turtles, caimans, and other species.

In the late afternoon, we will arrive at our campsite and set up our tents on one of the river beaches, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

After settling into the tents, we will take a short walk along the riverbank. In the evening, after dinner, we will gather around a campfire under the moonlight.

Overnight camping.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

DAY 3 : Macaw Clay Lick | Adventure Activities | Caiman Spotting

We will wake up at dawn to the calls of howler monkeys, followed by the sounds of other animals and birds flying across the reddish morning sky. At sunrise, we will begin a 25-minute boat journey upstream to the Great Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. Along the way, we will enjoy beautiful natural scenery and observe wildlife along the banks of the Tambopata River.

Upon arrival, weather permitting, we will witness one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the Amazon. Hundreds of parrots and macaws gather in an impressive display of sound and colour to feed on the mineral-rich clay of the riverbank. Breakfast will be served while we wait for the parrots and macaws to descend.

After the activity, we will travel downstream to the campsite to collect our belongings and tents. We will then return to Wasaí Tambopata Lodge, where we will have a short rest.

Before lunch, guests may swim near the lodge’s river port or participate in adventure activities such as zip-lining, the tightrope course, and the tri-line circuit.

After lunch, we will take an ethnobotanical walk to learn about the medicinal plants of the region and observe giant trees of different species.

In the evening, we will take a boat excursion along the banks of the Tambopata River to search for caimans.

Overnight at Wasaí Tambopata Lodge.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

DAY 4 : LAKE SANDOVAL.

After a delicious breakfast, we will begin our return journey by boat and land transportation to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, we will head to Wasaí Maldonado Hotel for lunch.

In the afternoon, we will navigate along the Madre de Dios River for approximately 30 minutes and then walk through the rainforest toward the peaceful and beautiful Sandoval Lake. The trail is approximately 3 kilometres long.

At the lake, your guide will paddle a small wooden canoe while searching for giant river otters, birds such as hoatzins and anhingas, and several species of monkeys.

Before nightfall, we will walk back to the Madre de Dios River and board the boat that will take us back to the city. During the journey, we will enjoy the sunset over the river.

Upon arrival at the hotel, we will enjoy a farewell dinner. The rest of the evening will be free for you to relax by the swimming pool or explore the nightlife of this welcoming city.

  • The dry season months between April to December are the best time to come and visit Cusco. During those days the possibility of rain is very little, so the roads are not swampy and the landscapes can be better to enjoy and takes the best pictures. On the other hand, the months with the most rain are January, February and March.
What are the coldest months in Cusco Peru?
  • The coldest season in Cusco are in the months from May to July. During this time the sun is strong in the day, but once it goes down or you spend much time in the shade, it can get very cold. It can go below zero at night, so warm clothes and Jackets are necessary to bring during these months.

A very personal experience

Our guide and driver could not have been more helpful. The bus was just for us but was modern, clean and tidy. The visits to the archaeological sites and the weavers were fascinating and breaks were timed around our needs. I can't recommend this outing too highly.

Sacred Valley, Machu Pichu, Rainbow Mountain

We spent 3 full days with Domingo combining the 2-day Sacred Valley/Machu Pichu tour with 1-day Rainbow Mountain, both originated in Cusco. The entire trip was awesome! Domingo provided everything we could as and more for our small group. He was punctual, helpful, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to travel with. His experience and local knowledge was evident as he (and our drivers) guided us across and through these cultural and geographic spectacles. Domingo provided insight we couldn't have achieved on our own, while giving us our space to explore and enjoy the surrounding at our own pace. Domingo also provided technical assistance if required, such as assisting us with train schedules. Domingo help make this trip a marvelous and memorable adventure..

An unforgettable tour

Excellent planning and accompaniment of the whole team. A lot of professionalism on the part of agents and guides. The only thing we didn't like was the little lunch option. While the buffet was optional, there were no other options either or told us in any previous village if we wanted to buy our lunch beforehand. We were practically forced to buy that lunch which by the way we found expensive.

Above and Beyond! The Best Way to See Peru

Our 14-day trip to Peru with Machu Picchu Valjes was absolutely seamless from start to finish. Traveling to a new continent with children where there is a language barrier can be daunting, but this team made us feel completely at home. From the moment we landed until the moment we departed, we had professional, prompt guides and drivers by our side.
