Get to know the Amazon Jungle in Iquitos 5D/4N

This 5-day tour of the Amazon starts with a pedestrian tour of the city of Iquitos, before setting sail on the Amazon River for a boat ride to the Cumaceba Amazon Lodge.

Along the way you will observe floating houseboats and riverside farmhouses and maybe even a pink freshwater dolphin! Throughout your tour you will get to know the animals of the rainforest including Sloths, Monkeys, Turtles, Anacondas and Boa Constrictors. As well as the indigenous inhabitants of the jungle, the Yahua people. This community will welcome you into their homeland through native clothing and a demonstration of the Cerbatana blowgun, which is a traditional Amazonian technique used to hunt birds and small monkeys.

Throughout the tour you will be treated to a tour of Monkey Island, embark on a canoeing experience along the Amazon River, get to know the native farmers of the region, and befriend the largest freshwater fish in the Amazon River basin known as the ‘PAICHE’ Arapaima Gigas.

DAY 1 : IQUITOS – CUMACEBA AMAZON LODGE

Upon arrival at the airport in Iquitos, you will be greeted by your transport and tour guide and transferred into the city of Iquitos. Depending on your arrival time, you will then be taken on a Pedestrian Tour of the city. Before being escorted to the private jetty to board the boat along the Amazon River.

During your journey along the Amazon, you’ll have an opportunity to visit different houseboats during the months of November to July. And observe different riverside farmhouses.

When you arrive at the Cumaceba Amazon Lodge, you’ll be welcomed with a traditional drink of the jungle and assigned your own private cabin. Your guide will give you a brief tour of the lodge and its surrounding gardens. You’ll then be treated to a typical self-service lunch followed by a walk through the jungle where you can get to know the local flora and fauna.

At dusk, you will watch the sunset over the Amazon River and go on a night walk through the jungle, experiencing everything from native insects, batrachians and tarantulas.

Once you have returned from your walk, you will have dinner at the lodge accompanied by myths of the Amazon. Sleep will find you soon after in your cabin.

DAY 2: CUMACEBA AMAZON LODGE

Take breakfast as the sun comes up over the Amazon River.

The morning will begin with a bird watching excursion in the rainforest, where you’ll have an opportunity to get to know the legendary Hoatzin bird as it thrives in its natural habitat.

You will also befriend the local Yagua community, whose people will welcome you into their culture through their native dialects, clothing and even a hunting demonstration using a Cerbatana (or Pucuna). This ‘blowgun’ is a is a simple weapon used by the indigenous Yagua people, consisting of a long narrow tube that is used to shoots darts through exhalation. The technique is a traditional Amazonian method of hunting birds and small monkeys.

After saying goodbye to the Yagua community, you will return to the lodge for a typical self-service lunch.

In the afternoon you will take a boat ride to visit a typical Amazonian family who live along the river, whose people will introduce you to their wildlife including Sloths, Monkeys, Turtles, Anacondas or Boa Constrictors. The boat journey will also offer you a chance to search the river for its resident gray and pink river dolphins.

As the night falls, you will have an evening Canoeing experience, amidst the backdrop of the sunset and the sounds of the nocturnal animals coming to life.

Once you have returned from canoeing, you will have dinner at the lodge and sleep in your private cabin.

DAY 3: CUMACEBA AMAZON LODGE – MONOS ISLAND

Take breakfast as the sun comes up over the Amazon River.

The morning will begin with a visit to the ‘Isla de los Monos’. A 450-hectare island sanctuary which rescues, rehabilitates and releases New World monkeys. Here you will be able to witness the monkeys thriving on their very own island.

After the tour of Monkey Island, you will be taken on a guided walk through the jungle where you will get to know some of the local plantations and ribereños.

As the night falls, you will have another Canoeing experience, this time along a tributary. Where you’ll have an opportunity to take stunning photographs of the Amazonian sunset.

Once you have returned from canoeing, you will have dinner at the lodge and sleep in your private cabin.

DAY 4: CUMACEBA AMAZON LODGE – PAICHES

Take breakfast as the sun comes up over the Amazon River.

The morning will begin with a visit to see the largest aquatic lilac in the world, the Victoria Regia. You will also be treated to a recreational fishing experience, where you have an opportunity to catch native fish such as catfish, sardines and Piranhas.

After fishing in the Amazon River, you will return to the lodge for a typical self-service lunch.

In the afternoon you will take a boat ride to visit a typical Amazonian riverside farm. Here you will get to know the daily customs and traditions of the native farmers and also befriend the largest freshwater fish in the Amazon River basin. Famously known as the ‘PAICHE’ Arapaima Gigas, the species measures up to 2 meters in length and can weigh up to 200 kg.

After saying goodbye to the farmers, you will return to the lodge for a dinner and rest in your private cabin.

DAY 5: CUMACEBA AMAZON LODGE – IQUITOS

Take breakfast as the sun comes up over the Amazon River.

The morning will begin with a leisurely walk through the rainforest, followed by a lesson on how to survive in the jungle.

Depending on the season you are visiting, you will also embark on a rowboat experience to a local farmhouse.

Once you have returned from rowing, you will be treated to a typical self-service lunch at the lodge.

At 2:30pm you will be taken in private transportation to the city of Iquitos., where your driver will drop you either at your hotel or at Iquitos airport.

The backpacks can be of any size, but we always recommend the medium, since, inside Machu Picchu, bags of more than 25 liters will not be allowed. If it is larger, you will need to store them outside the gates of the citadel.

Important information:

  • VACCINES, it is not obligatory, all our excursions take place in NON-ENDEMIC areas free of epidemics such as malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever. At the request of the passenger you can get vaccinated 10 days before your trip to the jungle. Check with your doctor.
  • Luggage in custody, leave them in our office for the days that will be in the jungle, in the same way it is recommended not to take more than S /. 180 or 200 soles for consumption expenses at the bar and purchase of handicrafts. If you have valuables, declare them to the personnel in charge. WITHOUT COST
  • The company is not responsible for loss of objects and accessories that are under their responsibility and that have not been declared or placed in custody, it is recommended to carry in a personal bag (kangaroo, backpack) all these personal items, as well as documents and money. If there is an incident, immediately inform the lodge administrator, in the second instance, at the Cumaceba Iquitos offices for the immediate solution, otherwise there will be no claim after the service has been completed.

Where does the tour start and end?
  • All ours tours begins with the pick up to the tourists at the door of their hotels “We pick up to our clients from any hotel located in the city of Cusco”, We recommend to stay close to the historical center of the city of Cusco, it will make it easier to find your hotel.
  • All our tours ends at the door of the hotels, it means the tours will finish with transfer to your respective hotel located in Cusco.
How to prevent altitude sickness?
  • The altitude sickness or soroche can cause you some discomfort during your visit such as dizziness, fatigue or nausea. Try to avoid alcoholic beverages and fatty foods before the visit.
  • To reduce symptoms, try to acclimatize yourself one day before to the altitude of the city of Cusco. We recommend to drink infusions of coca leaf (natural plant used by the Incas) is an excellent option to avoid the actitude sickness.
How is the accommodation?
  • For all the tours which include hotels. We offer hotels of 3* and 4* category, it has spacious and comfortable rooms, bathrooms, hot showers and bueffet breakfast. If the tourist like, you can change the accommodation to a better service. You just have to request it via email for an additional cost.
Which season is the best time to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu?
  • The dry season months between April to December are the best time to come and visit Cusco. During those days the possibility of rain is very little, so the roads are not swampy and the landscapes can be better to enjoy and takes the best pictures. On the other hand, the months with the most rain are January, February and March.
What are the coldest months in Cusco Peru?
  • The coldest season in Cusco are in the months from May to July. During this time the sun is strong in the day, but once it goes down or you spend much time in the shade, it can get very cold. It can go below zero at night, so warm clothes and Jackets are necessary to bring during these months.
How long in advance can I request the tour?
  • We recommend to purchase the tours weeks or months in advance, this because the train and Machu Picchu tickets has a limit of spaces, dont wait until the lust minute to book your tour, other ways you will not be able to find spaces.
During the trip to Machu Picchu, where the big luggages will stay?

The train company that operates to Machu Picchu does not allow the traveler to carry a suitcase that weighs more than 7 kilograms. To go up and visit the city of Machu Picchu, it is recommended to carry a light and small backpack for your convenience; the rest of the luggages you can leave them without any problem at the storage of your hotel in Cusco, or you can also leave at our office in Cusco city, we have an storage too.

Very Important in case you want to book the Inca trail to Machu Picchu:
  • CLASSIC INCA TRAIL 4 DAYS: If you want to book the Classic Inca Trail 4 days, you must to book early to get your desired date. Depending on the month you prefer to do the hike, you may need to book 6 months or more in advance, the limit of spaces for the inca trail 4 days is 400 people per each day.
  • SHORT INCA TRAIL: If you are booking the 1 or 2 day Inca Trail, it is preferred that you also book in advance, however 2 to 4 month in advance would be good, the limit of spaces for the short inca trail is 200 people per each day.
When is the best season to hike the Inca Trail?
  • The best time of year to do the inca trail is between May to October, with August and September being the best months of all. The trail is dry and the weather is lovely. During the rainy season between November to April  the trail will be wet and can make it more difficult.
