How to Get to Caral from Lima: Map and Options

The Sacred City of Caral is located in the province of Barranca, north of Lima. There are several ways to get there.

If traveling by private vehicle or with a tour agency, the route begins at kilometer 184 of the Panamericana Norte Highway, near Supe. From there, you travel approximately 23 kilometers until reaching the town of Caral. Then you take a right-hand detour toward the pedestrian bridge and walk between 20 and 30 minutes to the reception center.

During the dry season, approximately from mid-May to mid-November, visitors traveling by private vehicle may take an authorized detour to cross the Supe River, allowing direct access to the archaeological site’s reception center.

If using public transportation, take a northbound bus to the town of Supe, located at kilometer 184 of the Panamericana Norte Highway. Get off near the Supe market, where shared taxis (colectivos) operate to the town of Caral. The approximate cost is 4 soles per person, and vehicles carry up to six passengers. The colectivo drops visitors at the pedestrian entrance of the archaeological site, from where the marked path leads to the reception center.

The route begins at the detour at kilometer 184, where informational signs are posted. After traveling approximately 23 kilometers to the town of Caral, take the detour toward the pedestrian bridge and walk the final 20 minutes to the reception center.

Full-Day Tours from Lima

At 6:00 a.m., transportation picks up passengers from their hotel. At 6:15 a.m., the journey to the province of Barranca begins.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., the tour arrives at Áspero, an ancient fishing settlement associated with the Caral civilization, where visitors can observe pyramids, ceremonial platforms, and circular plazas.

At 1:00 p.m., there is free time for lunch.

At 2:00 p.m., the tour continues to the Sacred City of Caral, which features 32 monumental buildings and a complex settlement system that demonstrates an advanced social and religious organization.
