History of Huacachina

There are several legends, but this is the most widely accepted by locals. It tells the story of an Inca princess who was combing her hair with a magical mirror when she was surprised by a hunter watching her. As she fled, she dropped the mirror, which turned into the lagoon.

It is said that the princess transformed into a mermaid and still lives in the waters of the oasis. This legend contributed to Huacachina becoming a popular destination among the Peruvian elite during the 1940s, who visited the lagoon for its supposed healing properties.

How to Get to Huacachina

Getting to Huacachina from Lima is easy. First, take a bus to Ica, a journey of approximately 4–5 hours. Once in Ica, it is just a 10-minute taxi ride to the oasis.

Taxis are generally inexpensive and readily available from the bus terminal.
