Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain: Visitor Guide and Tips

What is Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain?

Palcoyo is a group of hills with natural red, ochre, yellow, and green stripes, formed by millions of years of sedimentation and minerals exposed by erosion. It is located in the Checacupe district, Canchis province, Cusco region, in the Andes mountain range.

It is considered a quieter and more accessible alternative to the famous Seven Color Mountain (Vinicunca), with fewer tourists and an easier hike.

Differences between Palcoyo and the Seven Color Mountain (Vinicunca)

The differences between these rainbow mountains are as follows:

Comparison of Difficulty and Hiking Time

Palcoyo offers a much more accessible journey:

The hike is short (~45 min to 1 hour), with little incline and well-marked paths.

However, the altitude can feel challenging if you’re not well acclimated.

In comparison, Vinicunca requires more stamina and usually takes several hours of uphill and downhill hiking.

Tourist Crowds and Route Experience

Palcoyo tends to have fewer visitors, meaning more tranquility, better photo opportunities without crowds, and a more “authentic” feeling of the Andean landscape.

During peak season (May–September), there are more groups, but Palcoyo still maintains a more relaxed atmosphere compared to Vinicunca.

How to Get to Palcoyo from Cusco

On Your Own

You can reach Checacupe from Cusco by road in approximately 3 to 4 hours by car or public transport.

From Checacupe, take a local transport to the trailhead entrance.

Most tours include pickup from your hotel in Cusco, transport, a guide, and return after the hike, making logistics easier.

Is it Necessary to Hire an Agency to Visit Palcoyo?

It is not mandatory, but most travelers prefer tours because:

  • Public transport can be limited or tricky.
  • Organized tours usually include a guide, snacks, and full logistics.

Altitude and Hiking Difficulty

The Palcoyo rainbow mountain is located approximately 4,900 meters above sea level. (16,076 feet.)

Physical Difficulty

The hike is considered easy to moderate due to its gentle terrain and short distance, though the high altitude can cause fatigue or altitude sickness if you are not well acclimated.

It is recommended to spend at least 48 hours in Cusco or a high-altitude location before the excursion to acclimate.

Altitude Sickness Tips

To enjoy your hike better:

  • Acclimate in Cusco before the tour.
  • Stay hydrated during the hike.
  • Coca tea or coca leaves can help with altitude sickness effects.
  • Walk slowly and breathe deeply.

Main Attractions on the Route to Palcoyo

The Three Rainbow Mountains

The most notable feature of Palcoyo is that it is not a single mountain, but a group of three multicolored hills with red, ochre, yellow, green, and white tones, resulting from millions of years of mineral deposition and erosion.
These mountains are located at approximately 4,900 m.s.n.m., making the place more accessible and tranquil compared to other color spots in Cusco.

The Stone Forest of Palcoyo

Along the route to the viewpoints, there are natural formations known as the stone forest: unique rock structures that look like giant sculptures carved by wind and ice, offering a surreal landscape that blends with the rainbow mountains.

The Colonial Bridge of Checacupe

On the Inca route from Cusco to Palcoyo, many tours and travelers make a historic stop in Checacupe, where bridges from different eras can be found:

  • An original Inca bridge, a witness to ancient routes between Andean communities.
  • A colonial bridge, built after the Spanish conquest.

This provides a historical look at the process of integrating the Andean territory and cultural exchange from pre-Columbian times to the colonial era.

Pricing and Schedule Information

Palcoyo Entrance Fee

Prices may vary, but a general entrance fee is around S/ 15 (~USD 4.50) per person before entering the area.
In organized tours, this entrance fee is usually included.

Schedule

Full-day tours depart very early (generally between 4:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m.) from Cusco, to take advantage of the light and weather.

The hike to the viewpoints usually finishes in the morning or at noon, depending on the tour logistics.

Best Time to Visit the Mountain and Avoid the Cold

For photos and a milder climate:

  • Between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. usually offers more stable sunlight and less wind.
  • Avoid early morning or late afternoon if you want less cold at the summit.

In general, shadows and wind can intensify the thermal sensation if there is no direct sunlight.

Weather and Best Time to Travel to Palcoyo

Dry Season vs Rainy Season

Dry Season (May–September):
Clearer weather, blue skies, and more intense colors. Ideal for landscapes and photos.

Rainy Season (October–April):
Trails can be wet or slippery, and clouds reduce visibility, but vegetation is greener.

Recommendations on What Clothes and Gear to Bring

  • Layered clothing (thermal jacket + windbreaker).
  • Hat, gloves, and scarf for the morning/cold.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat for strong sun exposure.
  • Water and energy snacks for the hike and acclimatization.
  • Optional trekking poles — not required.
  • Comfortable boots or trekking shoes with good soles.
