Rainbow mountain in Cusco

Vinicunca and Palcoyo are the two most visited Rainbow Mountains in Cusco. Both feature geological formations with shades of red, yellow, green, and blue, but they differ in difficulty level, number of visitors, and accessibility. Here, we help you choose which one best suits your trip.

Direct comparison: Vinicunca vs Palcoyo

Effort level and difficulty

Vinicunca: The hike reaches 5,200 meters (17,060 ft) above sea level. The total trek takes 6–7 hours and is steep, requiring good physical condition.

Palcoyo: Located at 4,800 meters (15,748 ft) above sea level. The hike lasts 2–3 hours, is less steep, and more accessible for travelers with less experience or families with children.

Tourist crowds

Vinicunca: It is the most popular Rainbow Mountain. During high season (June to August), there are many visitors, especially after 8:00 a.m.

Palcoyo: Receives fewer visitors, allowing you to enjoy the scenery more peacefully and take photos without crowds.

Duration of the hike

Vinicunca: Requires 6–7 hours of hiking plus transportation time from Cusco (approximately 3 hours one way).

Palcoyo: The hike lasts 2–3 hours. The total excursion time is shorter.

Vinicunca: the Seven Colors Mountain

Vinicunca, known as the Seven Colors Mountain, stands out for its intense red, yellow, green, and blue tones. These colors are the result of mineral sedimentation accumulated over thousands of years.

Main features

The colorful layers of Vinicunca are formed by different minerals: iron oxide (reds), iron sulfide (yellows), chlorite (greens), and other compounds. The hike to the summit offers panoramic views of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain and surrounding valleys.

Due to its proximity to the Salkantay region and the Sacred Valley, some tours combine Vinicunca with other attractions.

Best time to visit

To avoid crowds, visit Vinicunca around 5:00 a.m. Travelers arriving after 8:00 a.m. usually find the viewpoint much busier. Avoid June to August if you prefer fewer crowds.

Palcoyo: the less crowded alternative

Palcoyo offers similar colorful formations to Vinicunca but with a more accessible trail and fewer tourists. It is recommended for those who prefer calmer hikes.

Recommended for families

Palcoyo is suitable for families with children and travelers with less trekking experience. The hike requires less physical effort than Vinicunca and the terrain is less steep.

More peaceful experience

With fewer visitors than Vinicunca, Palcoyo allows you to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace and take photos without crowds in the background.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Vinicunca if:

  • You are in good physical condition
  • You want to visit the most photographed Rainbow Mountain
  • You don’t mind sharing the space with other travelers
  • You have a full day available

Choose Palcoyo if:

  • You prefer shorter and easier hikes
  • You are traveling with family or children
  • You want a quieter experience with fewer tourists
  • You have limited high-altitude trekking experience

Practical tips for any Rainbow Mountain

What to bring:

  • Layered clothing (temperatures change throughout the day)
  • Hat, gloves, and trekking boots
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses (high-altitude sun is intense)
  • Enough water (minimum 2 liters)
  • Energy snacks (cereal bars, nuts, dried fruit)

Acclimatization: Spend at least 2 days in Cusco before visiting any Rainbow Mountain to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
