Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Town, is the main access point to the Inca citadel. You can get there in two ways:

  1. Train from Ollantaytambo (2 hours)
  2. Train or hike from Hidroelectrica (20 minutes by train or a 3-hour walk)

Things to Do in Aguas Calientes

Hot springs

The hot springs pools are open until the evening and are a favorite plan for travelers after visiting Machu Picchu. The warm water and natural surroundings make them the perfect place to relax.

Located on the way to Machu Picchu, this museum displays archaeological pieces found at the citadel and explains the history of Machu Picchu’s rediscovery by Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Machu Picchu Butterfly Sanctuary

Just a few minutes from the town of Aguas Calientes, this natural sanctuary invites you into a living, colorful world where dozens of butterflies fly freely among orchids, ferns, and native plants from the cloud forest. There are no glass displays or cages here—the visitor walks directly through the ecosystem, observing up close how butterflies are born, grow, transform, and take flight.

What truly amazes visitors is witnessing the complete life cycle: from tiny eggs and curious caterpillars to the exact moment a butterfly breaks free from its chrysalis and spreads its wings for the first time. It is a natural spectacle that is both delicate and powerful, connecting travelers with the very essence of Andean–Amazonian biodiversity.

Mandor Waterfall

About a 1.5-hour walk along the route to Hidroelectrica, you’ll find this waterfall surrounded by tropical vegetation. The trail passes through forests with birds, butterflies, and native plants.

Explore the Town and the Artisan Market

Walking around the town of Aguas Calientes takes less than an hour. Along the way, you’ll find the local artisan market, traditional restaurants, the river that runs through the town, and sculptures displayed along the main streets.

The artisan market is one of the most lively and colorful spots. Here you’ll discover handmade textiles, alpaca garments, Andean jewelry, ceramics, wood carvings, and unique souvenirs that tell the stories of Cusco and the Andes.

Where to eat

There are options for every budget. In the budget category, you’ll find set menus with a starter, main dish, and a drink. Mid-range restaurants serve traditional dishes like baked guinea pig, grilled trout, and lomo saltado. For more refined dining, try Indio Feliz (Peruvian-French fusion), Tree House Restaurant, and Café Inkaterra.

Where to stay

Book in advance, especially during high season (May to October). The best options are located away from the train tracks to avoid noise:

  • Belmond Sanctuary Lodge: located at the entrance to Machu Picchu
  • Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel: a luxury hotel with excellent service
  • Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel: an eco-friendly experience in a natural setting

Tips for choosing a hotel

  • Look for hotels near the train station or bus stop
  • Make sure breakfast and Wi-Fi are included
  • Check reviews on TripAdvisor or Booking
  • Confirm whether they offer luggage storage

How to get there

PeruRail and Inca Rail operate trains from Ollantaytambo and Cusco with several daily departures. Services range from budget options to luxury experiences such as Vistadome and the Belmond Hiram Bingham.

Another option is to drive to Hidroelectrica and walk 2 hours to town. This route is more affordable and lets you enjoy the scenery along the Urubamba River.
