What is Misti Volcano?

Misti Volcano is one of the most important symbols of Arequipa, in southern Peru. It is located very close to the city and can be seen from almost anywhere. The city sits at about 2,335 meters / 7,661 feet, while Misti Volcano rises above 5,800 meters / 19,029 feet and is still considered an active volcano, although it has not erupted for many years.

Since ancient times, pre-Columbian cultures and the Incas considered Misti a sacred and powerful being. They believed it could cause disasters if angered, so they performed ceremonies and sacrifices to appease it. In 1998, the remains of children were found inside the crater, confirming these religious practices from more than 500 years ago.

Today, the volcano is one of Arequipa’s main tourist attractions. However, reaching the summit is not easy: the hike is long, takes many hours, and the terrain is covered with volcanic ash and rocks. For this reason, only people with good physical condition and proper acclimatization attempt the climb.

Due to the altitude, altitude sickness is common. To reduce the risk, it is recommended to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and smoking, eat light but energy-rich meals, rest during the first days, and, if necessary, take medication under medical advice. Coca tea or coca leaves may also help.

Arequipa is a region full of history, culture, and nature. If you want to explore it more deeply and enjoy a different kind of experience, there are organized travel options to discover the best of Peru in an authentic way.

Location: where is Misti Volcano?

  • Distance from the historic center: approx. 17–20 km (10.5–12.5 miles) in a straight line.
  • Elevation: 5,800 meters / 19,029 feet.
  • Mountain range: Southern Andes of Peru.
  • Region: Arequipa.

From almost any elevated point in the city, Misti is clearly visible. For this reason, since pre-Inca and Inca times, it has been considered a protective Apu (sacred mountain) of Arequipa.

How do you get to Misti Volcano from Arequipa?

You cannot access the volcano on foot directly from the city. Expeditions depart by 4×4 vehicle from Arequipa to the high-altitude zone:

  • Common route via Chiguata or Aguada Blanca.
  • Trekking starting point: between 3,800 and 4,200 meters / 12,467–13,780 feet (depending on the operator).
  • Driving time: 1.5 to 2 hours.

From there, the ascent begins on foot, usually offered as a 1-day program (very demanding) or a 2-day / 1-night program (recommended).

Best time to climb Misti Volcano (Arequipa)

For most travelers, the best season is the dry season, when skies are clearer, rainfall is minimal, and the route is more stable. In practice, this usually runs from April/May to October (sometimes until November), with the best months being May through September.

Less recommended months (rainy season): December to March. During these months, cloud cover, rain, and the possibility of snow or hail increase, making visibility and safety more challenging.

Summit weather: temperatures and snow season

On Misti, “normal” conditions are:

  • Daytime (sunny): lower and mid sections may feel relatively mild, but strong winds dominate near the summit.
  • Early morning and summit: below freezing almost always, typically around -5°C (23°F). During colder nights (especially May–August), temperatures can drop much lower, with an even colder wind chill.

When does it snow?

Snow is more likely during the wet season (December–March) and during specific cold-weather events. However, occasional snowfall can also occur outside these months.
