From Cusco to Adventure

(Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay Lagoon and Sky Camp)

The excitement begins early in the morning as we set off from Cusco toward Mollepata, a charming Andean village about a 2-hour drive away. The road takes us through breathtaking mountain scenery and lush valleys, as the sunrise softly colors the Andean peaks. This initial journey gives you a taste of the local life and nature surrounding this magical region.

On arrival in Mollepata, we take a short break to enjoy a local breakfast and prepare before continuing to Challacancha, where the trek officially begins. At around 11,800 feet (3,600 meters) above sea level, we take our first steps on this journey, breathing in the fresh mountain air as the excitement grows with every step, and the scenery becomes ever more majestic. We trek toward Soraypampa, an ideal stop at roughly 12,800 feet (3,900 meters), where towering mountains, glaciers, and clear skies create a paradise for photographers, evoking a sense of peace and freedom.

From Soraypampa, we head to the Humantay Lagoon, a hidden gem nestled among the mountains, which rewards us with turquoise waters and perfect reflections of snow-capped peaks. This moderate ascent is challenging, but each effort is worth it. Once there, you’ll have plenty of time to soak in the beauty, rest by the shore, and capture photos of this breathtaking crystal-clear lake that feels almost magical. Locals consider the lagoon sacred, believing it to be a home for nature spirits; it’s also an opportunity to connect with Andean beliefs and worldview.

After marveling at Humantay Lagoon, we descend to the Sky Lodge campsite, where we’ll spend the night. Here, the adventure continues: from your dome or tent, you can gaze up at an incredibly clear, starry sky, typical of the Andean region. Surrounded by mountains and a blanket of stars, the ambiance is perfect for relaxing, sharing stories, resting deeply, and preparing for the next day’s challenges. Prepare for an unforgettable rest under the stars and start to feel the adventure become a part of you.

Conquering the Salkantay Pass

(Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Huayracmachay – Chaullay – Collpapampa)

Day two brings an extraordinary challenge and views that will be forever etched in memory. We begin very early, just as the sun rises, illuminating the mountains and highlighting the glaciers. The main goal today is reaching the Salkantay Pass at approximately 15,100 feet (4,600 meters) above sea level—the highest point of the trek and one of the most spectacular summits in the Peruvian Andes.

Starting from Soraypampa, we ascend a winding path that tests endurance as we cross varied terrains. As we advance, the views become more magnificent; the snowy peaks of Salkantay grow closer, dominating the landscape with their immense beauty. Salkantay Mountain, considered sacred by local communities, stands majestically before us, its imposing snow-covered peak contrasting against the blue sky, creating a dreamlike setting. Each step on this ascent is a reminder of nature’s grandeur and our own resilience.

Upon reaching the Salkantay Pass, the reward is indescribable; being surrounded by white peaks and breathing the crisp mountain air is a feeling of pride and awe. We pause here to rest, soak in the panoramic views, and capture photos of this magical setting. The effort is worth every moment, and this achievement will stay with you forever. You can also feel the mystical energy of the place, a spot the Incas considered an “apus,” or protective spirit of the mountains.

From the Salkantay Pass, we begin the descent to Huayracmachay, where we stop to recharge with a well-deserved lunch. At this point, the landscape starts to change: the descent leads from cold mountain plateaus into increasingly lush and vibrant surroundings.

As we continue toward Chaullay and then Collpapampa, the vegetation shifts dramatically, and temperatures grow warmer. We enter the high jungle, where the atmosphere is humid, and the hills are covered with dense forests and exotic plants, a reminder of the proximity to the Amazon.

The trek to Collpapampa is a feast for the senses. Rivers cross the trail, birds fly from tree to tree, and the relaxing sound of water welcomes us into a setting entirely different from the mountain heights. At Collpapampa, our camp for the night, we enjoy a cozy, peaceful atmosphere, perfect for relaxing muscles after an intense day and restoring energy. This is a transitional point in the adventure, where you’ll feel revitalized and connected with nature.

This day is, without a doubt, one of the most intense and memorable of the entire trek. Here you can feel the vastness of the mountain and, at the same time, the warmth of the high jungle. Prepare for a deep rest, surrounded by nature’s sounds, and the satisfaction of having conquered the impressive Salkantay Pass.

The Route to Aguas Calientes

(Collpapampa – La Playa – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes Village)

The third day brings a slower pace, a welcome relief after the previous day’s demands. We start in Collpapampa, where we leave behind the high mountains and descend deeper into the high jungle, a completely different world that welcomes us with a burst of greenery and life. This section of the trek celebrates biodiversity as nature reveals its abundance through dense forests, crystal-clear rivers, and waterfalls flowing fresh and strong amid vast vegetation.

As we hike, we cross several rivers and small wooden bridges, surrounded by the sounds of tropical birds, vibrant butterflies, and the gentle murmur of flowing water. We see coffee, banana, granadilla, and fruit tree plantations, all cultivated by local communities who have lived in harmony with this environment for centuries. Often, we have the chance to pause and enjoy refreshing local fruits or even taste a freshly brewed cup of coffee, grown and processed right in the region.

We arrive at La Playa, a key rest stop where you can relax and recharge. Small shops offer snacks and drinks, ideal for revitalizing yourself before continuing. After a brief rest, we head towards Hidroelectrica, where the final stretch of the hike to Aguas Calientes begins. This section follows train tracks, famous for their spectacular views and the exciting atmosphere as each step brings us closer to the majestic Machu Picchu.

The trail from Hidroelectrica is an experience in itself. We walk in the shade of towering cliffs surrounding the valley and pass through natural tunnels created by thick vegetation. At this point, anticipation builds as the mountains reveal their peaks, and we know we’re drawing nearer to the Inca Citadel. As we move forward, the atmosphere fills with a sense of history and mystery, as if the Incan past is etched into every rock and tree along the path.

Finally, we reach the charming town of Aguas Calientes, a lively place at the foot of Machu Picchu. Here, you’ll find a unique blend of local hospitality and a tourist ambiance that allows you to relax and prepare for the grand adventure of the next day. Enjoy a well-deserved dinner, explore the artisan market for souvenirs, or simply relax in your accommodations while envisioning the moment you’ve been waiting for—the visit to Machu Picchu. Rest well and let the excitement fill you, for the next day you will witness the mystical Inca Citadel.

Exploring the Wonder of Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco

Finally, the moment every adventurer has awaited arrives: the exploration of Machu Picchu, one of the New Wonders of the World and the heart of Incan culture. This day begins with an early breakfast, full of energy, preparing you for what will be an extraordinary day. We’ll head toward the city gates just as the sun begins to illuminate the impressive terraces and Inca temples.

As we ascend, the anticipation is palpable; the sound of nature mingles with the murmurs of other travelers who, like you, are eager to uncover the secrets of this ancient wonder. The arrival at Machu Picchu is a magical moment. As we cross the threshold of the citadel, we are welcomed by the majestic sight of perfectly preserved structures rising among the mist-covered mountains. The energy and mysticism of this place are indescribable, infused with history and culture, making this visit even more special, especially after such an epic journey.

During our exploration, an expert guide will join us to unravel the mysteries of this archaeological site. You’ll learn about its history, its significance in the Incan civilization, and theories regarding its construction. You’ll walk among the impressive stone constructions, like the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana, and agricultural terraces that have witnessed the passage of time. You’ll have space to marvel at every corner of Machu Picchu, take photos, and absorb the magnificence of its natural surroundings, where mountain peaks rise majestically to the sky.

In addition, you’ll enjoy the panoramic view offered by Huayna Picchu Mountain, which overlooks the background, inviting you to climb. Those who dare to conquer it will be rewarded with even more spectacular views of the citadel and the valley surrounding it. It’s an experience that takes your breath away, both from the altitude and the beauty surrounding you.

After a day full of exploration and discovery, we begin our return to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cusco. This train journey offers panoramic views of the Andean landscape and the Urubamba River, a perfect close to this wonderful adventure. As the train advances, you can reflect on everything you’ve experienced, from the Salkantay trek to the imposing beauty of Machu Picchu.

Upon arriving in Cusco, you’ll feel filled with memories and experiences that will remain in your memory forever. This adventure has not only led you through stunning landscapes and physical challenges but has also allowed you to connect with the rich history and culture of Peru. We invite you to take with you not only photos but also a piece of the Andean spirit that you will always remember.

Practical Tips for Completing the 4-Day Salkantay Trek

The Salkantay trek is one of the most exciting and memorable adventures you can experience in Peru. To make sure you enjoy every moment of this incredible journey, here are some practical tips to help you prepare for this unforgettable trip.

Best Time to Travel

The ideal season to complete the Salkantay trek is during the dry season, from May to October. During these months, there is little rain, allowing you to enjoy clear views and pleasant daytime temperatures. However, keep in mind that the nights can be cold, so make sure to pack appropriate clothing. If you want to avoid crowds, consider planning your trip for April or November when favorable weather can still be enjoyed.

What to Pack for Your Trip

Preparation is key to enjoying the Salkantay trek. Here is a list of essential items you should bring:

  • Proper footwear: Waterproof, comfortable trekking boots are essential to handle the diverse terrain conditions.
  • Layered clothing: Bring thermal clothing, a waterproof jacket, and a cap for sun protection.
  • Light backpack: Choose a backpack large enough to carry your belongings yet light enough to avoid weighing you down during the trek.
  • First aid kit: Include basic medications, bandages, and any personal medication you may need.
  • Sun protection: Remember to bring sunscreen and sunglasses, as the altitude can intensify sun exposure.

Tips to Avoid Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is a common concern for those trekking at high altitudes like Salkantay. Here are some tips to prevent it:

  • Acclimatization: Allow yourself a couple of days in Cusco before starting the trek so your body can adjust to the altitude.
  • Hydration: Drink enough water throughout your trek. Staying well-hydrated will help your body adapt.
  • Light meals: Consume light, carbohydrate-rich meals during the hike. Avoid heavy meals that could drain your energy.
  • Rest: Listen to your body. If you experience symptoms of altitude sickness, don’t hesitate to take a break or descend slightly to acclimate.
