The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (also known as Camino Inca or Camino Inka) is a hiking trail in Peru that culminates at Machu Picchu. The route consists of three overlapping trails: Mollepata, Classic, and One Day. Mollepata is the longest of the three routes with the highest point atop the ‘Inca Chiriaska Pass’ at 5,100 m / 16,730 ft. This trail intersects with the Classic Inca Trail route on day 4, before crossing Warmiwañusqa, the ‘Dead Womans Pass’ on day 5. The trail winds its way through the high Andes Mountains, cloud forests, alpine tundra and sub-tropical rainforests. Ancient settlements, Inca tunnels, and a plethora of Inca ruins can be found along the trail, which concludes at the Inti Punku Sun Gate atop Machu Picchu Mountain. The two longer routes take visitors to incredible heights, resulting in an increased exposure to altitude sickness.
