What is the Yanahuara Viewpoint?

The Yanahuara Viewpoint is one of the most visited attractions in Arequipa. It is made up of white sillar stone arches built in the 19th century. It is known for offering a panoramic view of the city and of the Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu volcanoes.

The district of Yanahuara was formerly an important textile center, where products such as bayetas (traditional woolen cloths) and ponchos stood out. Francisco López Ballesteros contributed to the training of textile masters of Arequipa’s mestizo art. In 1870, Yanahuara was declared a Villa (town status) and is considered one of the oldest districts in Arequipa.

The Yanahuara Arches and Their Engraved Phrases

The Yanahuara arches stand out for being built in sillar, a volcanic stone characteristic of Arequipa. Engraved on them are well-known phrases from distinguished citizens of Arequipa that reflect local pride and identity. The main structure consists of seven arches.

The Parish Church of San Juan Bautista of Yanahuara

The Church of San Juan Bautista of Yanahuara is mainly built in sillar stone. Its construction was completed in 1750 and it preserves the main façade along with the upper choir arch, decorated with 18th-century foliage ornamentation. It is located next to the main square of the Yanahuara district in the city of Arequipa.

Misti Volcano is one of the main natural symbols of the city of Arequipa. It has an altitude of 5,822 meters (19,101 feet) and can be clearly seen from the Yanahuara Viewpoint. From this location, visitors can observe its main cone, corresponding to the current summit, as well as Chachani Volcano to the northwest and Pichu Pichu Volcano to the southeast. Misti forms part of the city’s landscape and historical identity.

The Callejón del Cabildo and Sillar Architecture

The Callejón del Cabildo is a small passageway located near the main square of the Yanahuara district. Its narrow streets preserve part of the traditional architecture.

Sillar architecture in Arequipa is characterized by the use of volcanic stone extracted from local quarries. This material, known as volcanic tuff or ignimbrite, defines the identity of the White City and its cultural heritage. It was widely used in Baroque and mestizo styles, serving in foundations and walls as well as in columns, arches, and decorative details.

Historically, during the 17th and 18th centuries, sillar mainly came from the quarries located in what is now the district of Yura and also from the Bengoechea lime quarry, the latter known for producing lower-quality stone.

Location: How to Get to the Yanahuara Viewpoint

The Yanahuara Viewpoint is located in the city of Arequipa. It can be reached in several ways, the most common being on foot, by bus, or by taxi.

How to Walk from Arequipa’s Main Square

You can reach the viewpoint on foot in approximately 20 to 30 minutes. The route may begin on Santa Catalina Street, continue toward Grau Bridge, cross the Chili River, and follow Cuesta del Ángel until reaching the viewpoint.

Taxi Distance and Travel Time from Downtown

From Arequipa’s Main Square, the taxi ride takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes under normal traffic conditions. During peak hours, it may extend to about 20 minutes due to bridge congestion. The distance is approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), crossing the Chili River toward the traditional Yanahuara neighborhood.

Gastronomy in the Yanahuara District

The gastronomy in Yanahuara preserves the traditional flavors of Arequipa. Historically, the area was known for its chicherías, rustic taverns where chicha de jora was served alongside traditional picantes.

Typical dishes include rocoto relleno (stuffed spicy pepper), chupe de camarones (a traditional thick shrimp soup), adobo arequipeño, soltero de queso (fresh cheese salad), and desserts such as queso helado.

Where to Try Queso Helado

Queso helado is one of the most representative desserts of Arequipa and can be found at San Camilo Market. According to tradition, it originated at the Santa Catalina Convent as a local adaptation of ice cream.

Nearby traditional picanterías include La Nueva Palomino and La Benita de los Claustros, where visitors can enjoy dishes such as zarza de patitas, cauche de queso, rocoto relleno, soltero de queso, chicharrón de chancho, and chupe de camarones.
