The Panoramic Circuit 1 of Machu Picchu is one of the best options for those who seek wide views of the citadel without exploring its interior. This circuit stands out for its panoramic routes, which allow visitors to capture the classic photo from above, as well as access points such as the Guardhouse, the upper terraces, Inti Punku, and the Inca Bridge.

What is Panoramic Circuit 1 and what does it include?

Circuit 1 includes four main routes:

  • Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain
  • Route 1-B: Upper Terrace (classic photo)
  • Route 1-C: Inti Punku (Sun Gate)
  • Route 1-D: Inca Bridge

All these routes offer panoramic views of the sanctuary and are ideal for appreciating the landscape from above.

The route through the upper terraces and the Guardhouse

The route through the upper terraces allows visitors to obtain one of the most iconic views of Machu Picchu. From the Guardhouse, you can capture the classic photo of the llaqta, along with a general view of the archaeological complex.

The panoramic view of Machu Picchu from above

From the upper part of the circuit, you can observe the citadel as well as the surrounding mountains such as Huayna Picchu and Huchuy Picchu. This point is one of the most visited due to its visual value.

The landscape of Circuit 1

The circuit is surrounded by flora and fauna typical of the sanctuary. It is possible to see llamas along the route and enjoy a natural environment characteristic of the Andean region.

The agricultural sector and surrounding terraces

On the upper terraces, visitors can observe the agricultural sector, which was used during Inca times for cultivation. These platforms demonstrate the agricultural engineering developed in Machu Picchu.

The visual connection with Huayna Picchu and other mountains

From this circuit, there is a visual connection with the main mountains of the sanctuary, as well as different archaeological sectors of the citadel.

Routes within Panoramic Circuit 1

Route 1-A: Machu Picchu Mountain

This route allows access to Machu Picchu Mountain. It is a longer hike, with an approximate duration of 3 to 4 hours (round trip). It begins at the main entrance and continues toward the upper platforms.

Route 1-B: Upper Terrace

This is the most accessible route within the circuit. It takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the upper terrace. It is ideal for those who want the classic photo without doing a demanding hike.

Route 1-C: Inti Punku (Sun Gate)

This route leads to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the original entrance of the Inca Trail. The hike takes between 20 and 40 minutes and is usually available during the high season.

Route 1-D: Inca Bridge

This is a short route that leads to the Inca Bridge, a defensive structure built on a cliff. It is also usually available during the high season and requires caution during the walk.

Inti Punku and other route extensions

Access to Inti Punku allows visitors to extend their experience within the circuit, connecting with other points such as the upper terraces and the Guardhouse. The total route can extend up to approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The connection between Circuit 1 and Inti Punku

This connection is important due to the opening of new routes. In addition, Inti Punku serves as an access point linked to the Inca Trail, so the available routes may vary.

Availability of special routes depending on the season

Routes 1-C (Inti Punku) and 1-D (Inca Bridge) are usually available only during the high season, so it is recommended to check availability and book in advance.
