What to bring to Machu Picchu
With the title of one of the seven wonders of the world, and a bucket list moment for many, it is no wonder Machu Picchu is the number one favorite attraction for tourists in Peru. The lost city of the Incas receives more than 1.5 million tourists annually, making it the most important tourist destination in the whole of South America.
However, there are a few things to consider when planning a trip to the Citadel of the Incas. Such as the weather, entrance tickets to Machu Picchu, and most importantly, understanding the government restrictions in order to pack properly.
The mysterious Inca sanctuary is located on the border between the high Peruvian jungle and the Andes mountains. Consequently the climate is a combination of wet and rainy and warm and humid. However, this region has only two annual seasons: the dry season (April to December) and the rainy season (December to April).
To help organize your trip, we have prepared some recommendations based on the varied climatic conditions of the region.

What to bring on your visit to Machu Picchu
For your travel to Machu Picchu, we’ve made a list of the things you should consider taking to Machu Picchu and the city of Cusco. Please consider that the accessories necessary for the trip depends on the season when you’re thinking of visiting.
1. Travel Documents
1.1 Passport & identity document – Passport and personal documents must be valid for 7 months before traveling to Peru.
1.2 Documentation before covid-19.- In the face of the pandemic, the Peruvian government issued ‘essential restrictions’ that must be met before entering Peru.
2. Clothing and Accessories
Backpack – The size of your backpack should be between 20 and 25 litres. We recommend that it is both waterproof and durable, given the varied climatic and temperature conditions of the region.
Footwear – The necessary footwear depends on the type of tour you undertake in Peru and the season you are visiting. For example, in the rainy season, we recommend goretex trekking shoes or boots for the trails and the valley. During city tours of Cusco and Machu Picchu citadel, we recommend comfortable light sports shoes, with good soles and ankle support.
Waterproof jacket – Its necessary to bring a few different jackets, as the weather is unpredictable in Cusco & Machu Picchu.
Pants – As Machu Picchu can be both wet and humid, we recommend bringing lightweight waterproof pants.
Long-sleeve polos – We recommend long-sleeve polos/shirts to protect your arms from high-altitude sun and mosquitos.
3. Personal hygiene accessories
The following are personal hygiene accessories you should consider:
- Hairbrush, shampoo, shower gel, soap
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss
- Small travel towel
- Deodorant
- Lotions, creams
- Lip balm with SPF protection
- Wet wipes
- Sunscreen (high SPF factor)
4. Electronic Accessories
In order not to lose communication with your friends and family, it is necessary to carry a cell phone and camera. Wifi is available in most hotels and restaurants, but network signal is limited in the Valley. You can also buy a temporary, pre-paid sim card from a local network provider if you prefer to be connected independently throughout your travels.
Extra batteries and portable battery chargers are also recommended, especially if you are planning a multi-day hike.
5. Medicines
If you are undergoing any medical treatment or have health problems (particularly with the lungs or the heart), then we recommend that you consult your doctor before travelling, since Cusco is located at an altitude of 3,300 meters.
