When travelling to Machu Picchu, visitors will need to plan their travel itineraries in detail. This is because the citadel of Machu Picchu is located 228 km from the city of Cusco. Although there are many ways one can travel to Machu Picchu, most tourists chose to arrive by train into the station of Aguas Calientes.

Depending on the season, trains to Aguas Calientes operate from the city of Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with the most popular route departing from Ollantaytambo. However, visitors will need to be aware that the town of Ollantaytambo is a 2-hour car journey from the city of Cusco, so this travel time will need to be factored in when planning a trip to Machu Picchu.

Which companies operate trains to Machu Picchu?

Train Stations

The train stations to Machu Picchu have been decentralized due to the demographic growth of the city. As a consequence, there are now only two train stations in the city of Cusco. On the outskirts of the city, there is the train station of Poroy, and in the Sacred Valley there are the stations of Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is the most popular train station as it is the closest to Machu Picchu, However, visitors will need to be aware that the town of Ollantaytambo is a 2-hour car journey from the city of Cusco, so this travel time will need to be factored in when planning a trip to Machu Picchu. A bus ticket to Ollantaytambo usually costs 10 soles per person.

Ollantaytambo Station: Av. Ferrocarril s/n, Ollantaytambo, Sacred Valley (Cusco).
Poroy Station: Calle Roldan s/n, District of Poroy, Cusco.
Urubamba Station: Avenida Ferrocarril s/n, Urubamba, Sacred Valley (Cusco).
