How much does it cost to Travel to Machu Picchu

If you have ever wondered how much it costs to travel to Machu Picchu, then the answer is serious, it depends largely on your travel style since for most travelers this trip to the Inca citadel is difficult to do. However, visiting the archaeological site can be expensive if not planned in advance. In general, the price of a tour to Machu Picchu will depend to a large extent on the tourism company, the package (private or group tour) that you reserve or if you prefer, you can also do it on your own regardless of the way we choose to arrive, the total cost will vary, in all cases the common denominator of flight tickets, trains, income, transportation, food and stay.
Below you will find a list of some general expenses to visit Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Cost of Air Flights Lima – Cusco

If you are an international traveler you should keep in mind that flights to Peru are expensive, especially to get to Cusco due to its strong demand, flight prices go up and more if you plan to visit in high season. The costs may vary according to the airline, the service and the flight schedule you choose.

Train Travel Cost

When you arrive in Cusco you will still have to take the train service from Cusco to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) and for this service you will have to take one of the two companies (Peru Rail or Inca Rail). The costs will depend on the type of service and the times you choose for your trip.

Alternate Route to Machu Picchu

As we have seen, traveling by train to Machu Picchu is very expensive since those that operate this service are concessionary companies. For this inconvenience, there is an alternate route to Machu Picchu that consists of taking a bus from Cusco to the Hydroelectric station. The trip lasts approximately 8 hours. Upon reaching the hydroelectric plant, it will continue with a walk of approximately 2 hours until reaching the town of Aguas Calientes. In this place you will spend the night so that the next day you can visit Machu Picchu.

Cost of Income to Machu Picchu

The purchase of entrance tickets to Machu Picchu is another cost to take into account since the costs depend on the circuit you want to do. To visit the Inca citadel there are 4 circuits from which you will have to choose the one that suits you best. Also remember that these tickets have to be reserved 2 to 3 months in advance, especially when it is high season. The cost of entrance tickets for foreigners are as follows.

  • Machu Picchu Only $38.00
  • Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu Mountain $50.00
  • Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain $ 50.00

Hire a Tour Guide

If you are traveling on your own and are about to enter the Inca citadel, you must take the service of a tour guide since you can only enter accompanied by a guide. The average cost of this service is 20 dollars

Food Cost

Food is also another factor to take into account since in Cusco there is a variety of stews to enjoy but depending on your budget there are menus from 7 soles to 15 soles in the places.
